National Read Across America Day

Thursday, March 2nd is National Read Across America Day, held annually in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday to encourage children to read.

Locally, the Columbus Area United Way will be organizing community volunteers to read during the day to more than 450 students at Columbus Public, Lakeview, Columbus Catholic and Immanuel Lutheran elementary schools. Volunteers will dawn a signature red-and-white-striped hat and read The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

Thanks to the generous donations of Columbus Public Schools Foundation and Columbus Noon Rotary, the 21 participating classrooms will also receive a copy of the book along with Dr. Seuss pencils, bookmarks, and “Reader’s Oath” poster.

Columbus Area United Way encourages everyone to celebrate National Read Across America Day by reading to a child in their life on Thursday, and every day!

Research shows that early reading is a key component of successful child development.

Columbus Area United Way also supports early reading and youth development all year long through programs such as the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Kindergarten Readiness Camp, Little Free Libraries, and more.
