About Our Focus and Programs

Women United launched in 2024, with our first public event taking place that October. We invited women of all ages to join us for open-table discussions focused on identifying the challenges women face in our community. Each table was led by a facilitator who took notes and later shared key insights with the larger group.

Through these conversations, several recurring themes emerged: the need for mentorship, a sense of belonging, mental health support, advocacy, and relief from family stress.

By comparing these insights with the Community Health Needs Assessment from our local Health Department, we were able to identify a clear path forward. The committee unanimously chose "Access to Health" as our primary focus. Recognizing that access to both behavioral and medical care impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s or family's life.

Looking at Columbus Area United Way's programs, such as the Student Health Fund and Youth Mental Health Vouchers, they already align with this focus, allowing us to make an immediate and meaningful impact. The Student Health Fund provides dental, medical and vision health care for students in grades K-12 who do not have family insurance, who do not qualify to receive government funds or who are financially unable to provide for health care. Students are screened by school nurses or counselors and parents are contacted to ensure student is eligible for funds.

A need for the use of Youth Mental Health Vouchers by a family is identified by a school counselor, school social worker/interventionist, school psychologist or community service provider (Professional Partners, Juvenile Services, in-home visitation service, etc.). Referrals are typically made for youth that are demonstrating signs of depression, anxiety, anger and/or other signs of psychological stress that are negatively affecting educational achievement, and/or demonstrating poor coping skills that are negatively affecting educational achievement.
